2008 Workshop Series with Tasira
Strimban-Barishev
Studies in Green, Red, Yellow, White, Blue, Purple for Botanical Artists

Light should be one of our prime considerations when painting plants. Light can add a strong, expressive look to your painting by creating a broad range of colour values, hues and proper choice of colour temperatures.
When plants are the subjects in your paintings, it is obvious that the colour green can dominate a large portion of it, even sometimes to the point of being done completely in green. There are so many different hues of green, and for every other colour.  Each particular colour changes depending on the lighting and texture of the subject.  Colour perspective, that is the position of colour in your artwork, will also be examined. In addition, participants also learn how to accurately produce the textures of a specimen, whether it be shiny, matte, smooth or bumpy.  We'll also discover how to handle veins, spots, and other markings, as well as changes in colour which occur within the same leaf or petal.
Each colour workshop will have the same structure as the "Study of GREEN for Botanical Artists" as described below. Participants will not only gain a solid foundation of colour theory, but also gain experience in proper mixing of each colour.
A reference chart will be created which will be useful in
completing of any artwork.

Light should be one of our prime considerations when painting plants. Only light can add a strong, expressive look to your painting by creating a broad range of colour values, hues and affecting the temperature of the colours.
When plants are the subjects in your paintings, it is obvious that the colour green can dominate a large portion of it even sometimesto the point of being done completely in green. In addition to this, each green will change its colour according to the light,  texture, and position in your artwork. The last one is called colour perspective.

GREEN will be the colour of our interest in our first workshop of
"2008 Workshop Series with Tasira Strimban-Barishev"

In addition, participants also learn how to create textures of leaves - shiny, matte, textured, and how to handle veins, especially light veins of dark leaves.

This is a
2 day workshop for a small group of no more then 7 students.
The limited class size maximizes the instructor’s attention to each student.

FIRST Day
- Learning to mix 7 key colors of green
- Demonstration of application of those greens in you artwork
- Creating 3 small paintings of leaves from live specimens (leaves will be provided)
- Questions and answers with possible demonstrations

SECOND Day
- Learning to paint light on leaves (highlights) and transparent green
- Demonstration of application of highlights and transparent green in your artwork
- Creating 1 painting of leaves from live specimens (leaves will be provided)
- Learning to use highlights and deep and strong colours of green to emphasize the focal point of your artwork
- We conclude the workshop with critique

Bring your lunch. Tea and coffee will be provided.
Material list and map of the location will be provided upon registration.

If you want to ensure your spot in this workshop and due to the small size of the group, I would advise you to register as soon as possible.

Coloured Pencil Workshop

BIO
Following a few general interest courses in Drawing, Raquel attended the Ontario College of Art, where she graduated in 1980.

After working with clay and copper enamellings for a while, Raquel wanted to reconnect with her passion for drawing and capture colour and form on paper. At that point, she decided to learn how to use coloured pencils.
The first step was taking a University of Toronto class with Professor Celia Godkin. Later on Raquel continued learning from books on the subject, increasing her new skills. When joining the Botanical Artists of Canada, Raquel had a chance to take two workshops in Toronto with Arlene Steinberg, a coloured pencil artist from New York, and has been working on her own since then.
Her work, comprising drawings, ceramic and enamelled pieces, and coloured pencil paintings, has been exhibited in numerous group shows in Toronto, and some of her work is held by private collectors.
Raquel loves the versatility of her chosen medium. Coloured pencils allow for soft techniques, hard edges and colour saturation. The range of possibilities is infinite, and the techniques varied. Basic sketching has a character of its own, and sustained work becomes paintings, where line disappears and only colour, tone and textures prevail. The softness and lightness of hair, fur and feathers are within reach, as well as hard transparent or reflective surfaces such as glass or metal - three-dimensional objects become real on a two-dimensional surface, and the natural world can be fully expressed with images of soft clouds, fierce storms, and all the wonders in between!
Coloured pencils are a slower medium than others, but very rewarding and more forgiving than one might expect.

ARTIST STATEMENT
Nature's wonders and my surroundings are my main inspiration, from the minute world I can find in a small wildflower to the way light hits on surfaces and shows the three dimensions of everything that is dear to me.
My artwork centers around visual elements I feel a closeness to, and it is important for me to share with others that special vision that touches me deeply.
Returning to the very first job I had as a young woman, teaching is an important and enjoyable part of my life. Passing on my knowledge and experience helping others discover the unique path to their own self-expression, and the development of their visual language, is my personal focus.
