Animation is a great way to help kids and teens better understand storytelling and sequencing of ideas, whether in words or pictures. Simple animation techniques are fun, hands-on projects that incorporate play, creativity and collaboration. Hand-drawn animation activities are an excellent step to help children become better storytellers and
prepare them for a storyboarding project, followed by drawing animation. In class we will study different styles of drawing and painting, which will lead us to a variety of animation styles. Students begin by learning how to create characters out of basic shapes and progress to drawing characters from different angles and eventually to movement sketches.
As they advance, they learn how to personalize their characters and create backgrounds to support their scene. In the end, students will create a storyboard in which they will display their full understanding of how words and pictures can work together.
As we go along, we'll pay special attention to the more traditional analog styles of animation and then progress to finding a distinct style. Students will experiment to see what feels natural, what works for the purposes of their animation, and how to combine different style elements to create an individual approach. At the end, students will realize that there is no one way in which to create animation, but instead that it's a field of possibilities and creativity.
Classes are taught by Valeria Kouznetsova, professional artist and animator.
